Instead of a normal recipe posting day, I want to join the BADD (Bloggers against Drunk Driving) group and stand up for sobering up.
When Kari mentioned her new campaign against drunk driving I knew that I wanted to be a part of it as much as I could, but I couldn’t think of any personal stories to tell. Although I feel like I know Kari, we have never met.
Kari is an amazing blogger who was out running, training for a half-marathon last summer when she was hit by a drunk driver. She was in the hospital for a few weeks, and is still on her road to recovery, trying to get back into jogging and back to her normal life.
So, I couldn’t think of any one I personally knew that had been affected.
Of course that didn’t mean that I wouldn’t still stand up for the cause.
Did you know that on average, every 40 minutes some one in the United States is killed by a drunk driver? That’s 36 people a day. I had no idea, NO idea that the numbers were that high. How heart breaking.
But then this morning I remembered something. Its still not someone very close to me, but it is someone I knew. In September one of my past students was riding on the back of a motorcycle with one of his friends. They were hit by a drunk driver and the person in the back (who was my student for a few months) flew off the motorcycle and was killed. I remember talking to him about his goals, he wanted to work with computers, to go back to school and get his masters degree, maybe get married one day. And those opportunities were taken from him.
Please join me in this stand. And if you are someone who likes to drink, please be responsible. Get a taxi. Find a friend who will drive you home. BE RESPONSIBLE.
And for the rest of us, take advantage of the great things in your life and take the chances you are scared about taking.
