Its no secret that I love German things. I love the language, the food (especially the candy), the countries and more. So ever since I heard of Siegfried’s Delicatessen in Salt Lake City I have been wanting to go. I heard only great reviews on the food, and I could only hope that there would be German chocolate for me to buy!
About a month ago Nate and I planned to go to Siegfried’s for dinner. We were taking engagement pictures for Nate’s brother and our future S-I-L around downtown and we figured it was a perfect excuse to FINALLY go to Siegfried’s. We arrive at Siegfried’s around 8:30Pm, but their hours said they were open till 9:00 and there was even a sign outside saying “Dinner served from 6:00PM- 9:00PM”. Unfortunately once we got inside they told us a different story, that they stopped serving dinner at 8:00PM. We were starving so it wasn’t worth arguing with them, and I was so frustrated I didn’t even want to buy any candies (which were plentiful). Last week Nate and I didn’t have any plans so we decided we would give Siegfried’s another try.
We left right after work on Friday so that we could get there in time, and hooray they were still serving dinner when we got there. I had heard only good things about their Goulash with Spaetzle so I really wanted to try that. And I kind of convinced Nate to order their Wienerschnitzel because I really wanted to try that. The food is mostly already cooked and kept in a warmer so they just scoop it up for you right when you order, but everything was plenty warm for me to eat! They give you a lot of food, so the meals are probably about 8 dollars each, but definitely enough food you could split the meal if you wanted.
The goulash dish came with a heaping portion of spaetzle (which is just a type of egg noodle) topped with goulash (which is basically stew). The goulash was just a little bit spicy, but it was really delicious and the pieces of meat in it (I think it had both beef and pork) were so tender and good. It tasted really good on top of the noodles, and I think I need to try stew on noodles at home now too. The meal also came with a hard roll, that was so soft inside, and so good with butter on top. I thought it was delicious and Nate really loved it too.
The wienerschnitzel meal came with two sides, so Nate decided to also get spaetzel with gravy on top, and hot potato salad. He said he liked both. The potato salad was a little mustardy (which is typical) and the gravy on the spaetzle was a little bland. But the wienerschnitzel was very good! Some how they get their schnitzel to be so thin, it was amazing, crunchy and delicious.
We of course had to end our meal with dessert, and there were so many delicious desserts to choose from. We decided to get the German raspberry cake, which was a moist raspberry cake with a raspberry flavored gelatin on top, topped with one perfect raspberry. We both really liked the cake! They also have apple strudel, cheesecake, German chocolate cake and more, so I will definitely be trying those next time we go. And of course my favorite thing about the delicatessen was all the German treats. They had things like prepackaged dry meals (think hamburger helper, or pasta roni like) from Germany, that reminded me of my study abroad days and the quick Knorr pasta dishes I ate so often. They had bread, and hot mustard, and curry ketchup (which I will definitely have to try one day) and saurkraut and jams. They had many types of cookies, I really wanted leibniz kuchen and they had them, we got some dipped in milk chocolate – amazing! But the only thing they had of traditional Manner was a huge 9.00 bag that I wasn’t ready to commit too. But the candy, oh the candy. They had a lot of types of Haribo, but not all that I remember, of course they had your typical gummy bears and coca cola bottles though. And the chocolates, they had ritter sport, milka, lindt, and kinder. All the best types. They had the most variety of Ritter Sport, and the prices weren’t bad either at 3.00 a bar (which is what they would cost at Smiths or Target too) but there were so many different flavors it was hard to pick. So, I got 6! Oops! We got my favorite Berry Yogurt, which is milk chocolate with a berry yogurt middle – seriously the best. And we also got duo chocolate (milk and white), cookies and cream (milk chocolate with an oreo like filling), white chocolate with corn flakes, amarena cherry and milk chocolate with roasted nuts, honey and corn syrup. — Its funny because when I was in Austria I almost always bought Milka bars because compared to Hershey they were amazing, but they were so much cheaper than Ritter Sport at like 1.25 Euro a bar compared to 2 or more for Ritter (so like 1.60$ compared to 2.60$) . But here the price differences are only about .40 cents, so I figure I might as well go for the elite stuff, Ritter Sport, plus Ritter has more flavors.
After our first trip to Siegfried’s I thought I was going to be disappointed, but once we were able to go back I was not disappointed at all. The service was actually good (despite what our first experience and some reviews have said) so I think they might just have mood swings. We will definitely be going back to have dinner there again and especially to get some candy! The location is really close to Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake, or just very central in general, so I think we might have to stop in just for some treats sometimes. Their address is 20W 200S and I think if you are in the area this is definitely a place you will want to visit! (Just make sure you go before 8:00 for dinner – they are most popular for lunch, and I think it is probably served from noon on. Check out their menu to see what you might like to eat and let me know if you go!
*I was not compensated in any way for my review. This is simply my opinion and I wanted to share a good restaurant with those in the area.

What a fun review! My husband has a master’s in German and taught there for a semester, so we are in love with all things German too! We’ve been to Siegfried’s a few times, but we’ve had some weird experiences there. Thanks for inspiring us to go back! And the German chocolates… yum! We are obsessed with Milka Schoko & Keks (which we can never find here in the states) and Choco Leibniz is pretty much my favorite thing ever. Another great source for German chocolates is Pirate O’s in Draper… they have a million varieties of Ritter Sport, and I think it’s like $2.25 for a bar (awesome).

Alicia, I think they are a little interesting, but the food is good and the German snacks and treats make it all worth it for me that I’ll definitely be going back. Thanks for the recommendation on Pirate O’s, 2.25 is a GREAT price for Ritter Sport so I will have to try that next!

I remember taking my kids to Siegfried’s when they were young for encased meat. So many types of sausage! My favorite was a white sausage–weisswurst, I think. We have a store here that sells a variety of Ritter Sport chocolate. my favorites are yogurt and marzipan, but I’d love to try the berry yogurt, Olympia (looks amazing), and chocolate mousse. You are tempting me to put this deli on the list for our next trip to SLC! Nope. You’ve done it. It’s on the list. 🙂

Keli, although my German skills have gone down the drain a little, Weisswurst is correct. I want to go back and try some of their yummy meats, but I don’t know if I would be able to tell what kinds they all are because they are in German! I also love the marzipan, but wish it was with milk chocolate instead of dark. And I’ll have to try the plain yogurt next time, it sounds yummy! Let me know next time you’re in the area I’d love to meet you at Siegfrieds 😉
