I don’t know if you even noticed, but I’ve been a little more absent on the blog the last few weeks. The reason is, because I gave birth to my beautiful new son a couple weeks ago, and besides being completely occupied trying to take care of a toddler and a newborn, but also because the last few weeks of pregnancy really slowed me down. I’m obviously getting a little more personal in this post, but don’t worry there aren’t any graphic details or pictures being shared. If you’re just here for the recipes, we’ll have two of my new favorites next week on Monday and Friday as usual – so come back then!
Our baby was due to be born on March 12th. Because Colby was born late, I didn’t exactly want to this baby to be born a week late too. March 12th is also Nate’s birthday so if we could separate their special days by a few days then that would be better for us as well, so when the doctor asked if I wanted to be induced at 39 weeks of course I said yes!
Because of the hospital we wanted to deliver at Tuesday the 7th of March was the date my doctor gave us to be induced to have the baby. On the 6th in the evening the hospital called me to tell me that I should come in at 6:15. I’d been anxiously awaiting the call all day long so I was glad I wouldn’t at least have to wait long to get started on Tuesday as well.
Whenever I have something early the next morning I usually don’t sleep well, my mind is always running and I’m anxious about missing my alarm, and about what was to come the next day. Monday night we went to bed semi early so that we wouldn’t be too exhausted the next morning. We woke up around 5:20 and just before 6:00 we woke Colby up and took him to our neighbors to watch him until Nate’s parents flew in later that day.
We checked in right around 6:15 and they took us into room 121. They got my whole medical history (or what felt like it), hooked me up to an IV, drew some blood for tests, and started a saline drip. They hooked up the pitocin, probably around 7:30 and set it to a 4.
I was already dilated to a 3 and had been for a week, and I was ready to get this baby out with out too much pain so we called for the anesthesiologist to come right away. I got my epidural, which was a little more nerve racking this time around since I was a little more aware of what was going on. (With Colby I was already on other pain relievers, and ambien so I could sleep through the night). But all went well with the epidural. Around 8:15 my doctor came to break my water, and thankfully the epidural had already kicked in that I couldn’t feel it at all. I quickly noticed that my right leg was falling completely asleep but that I could still feel my left leg quite a bit (enough to feel myself scratch it, or give myself a little pinch). The contractions and cramping began and I could feel them in the left side of my body, but they weren’t too strong so I was okay with it. The contractions were coming about every 3 minutes.
(I got in a little nap in between the nurses checking me)
The nurses checked on me every hour to see how I was dilating. Around 9:30 I was a 4, 10:30 a 5, and then 11:30 it had sped up a bit, and I was at a 7. I could feel the contractions getting stronger and more painful and tried to push the button for more pain relief. They added a little fentanyl drip into the epidural thing, which didn’t seem to do much for my pain, but made me throw up just like it had done in my delivery with Colby and I threw up 3 times throughout.
Around 11:45 another anesthesioligist came to give me a top off of whatever the strong stuff is for the epidural. The nurses came back in shortly after saying the baby’s heart rate had dropped and that often means they are getting ready to be born. They checked and I was dilated to a 9 already. They put me on oxygen since his heart rate was lowered, and that was my first minor freak out about something not being okay with the baby. Less than 10 minutes later I was dilated to a 10 and extra hospital staff and my doctor were coming in to get ready for the baby! They tilted my bed downward and got my legs on the sides to get me ready to push.
Thankfully the top off of the epidural worked because I couldn’t feel any more pain in my left leg, but I also couldn’t feel myself pushing. They had me push 3 times in each of 2 contractions, and then in a third contraction they had me push for 2 sets of 3 right in a row! The doctor cut me a little so I wouldn’t tear, said baby had passed the bone, one more push and then he had me look down and there he was! He was all covered in the goopy white stuff and didn’t cry right away, but then when he did it was the most precious sound! They took him to the side to clean him up quickly and then I got to do skin to skin with my sweet boy.
He was born at 12:33pm on March 7th, 2017 and was 7 lbs 10 oz and 20 in long!
We’ve had our little man in our life for 2.5 weeks now and we couldn’t be more in love. *Knock on wood* he is such a good baby! We are all adjusting to life as a family of 4, especially Colby because he’s used to getting so much attention from mom and dad. But Nate and I are re adjusting to getting less sleep at night.

You so know it Lorie. If they could only figure out kissvision or teleporting things would be a tiny bit easier.
