In our second edition of Foodies Taste Test, we taste tested sugar cookies in an effort to find the best sugar cookie in Utah. We each went to 2 or 3 or 4 different bakeries, cookie shops, or soda shops around to search for the best sugar cookie in Utah. And we found a winner!

We got cookies from different places across Utah, from up north in Cache Valley down to Utah County. Some of the cookie shops have locations farther south down to St. George as well.

We tried cookies that were soft, cookies that were crunchy, cookies that had a buttercream frosting, some with a cream cheese frosting, some delicious, and some not so good. Of course everyone has different tastes and ideas for what the best sugar cookie is, but for this challenge we wanted to come to a consensus. We got recommendations from people around Utah to tell us what their favorite sugar cookies are, and were we should try. And we all were able to agree on the best sugar cookie. So are you ready for the results?

Suss Cookie Co. This cookie was very moist, and soft with a little crunch on the edges. The frosting is very buttery, with a good frosting to cookie ration. They have two locations; in Midway and in Provo. The cookies cost $3 for one, or a half dozen for $14, or a dozen for $27. I gave this cookie 9 points.

Swig N Sweets. This one was a bit gummy, and really floury. The frosting wasn’t spread on evenly and wasn’t super sweet. They were the first “soda shop” sugar cookie. Their style is to eat the cookie cold, which I don’t like. I only like the cookies when they have warmed up a bit for a couple hours.  have locations all across the state of Utah, from St. George, to Orem, and up to Logan. The cookie cost ____ for one. The cookies cost $1.89 each. I gave this cookie a 5.

Twisted Sugar. The texture on this cookie was really moist, almost gummy. The cookie is topped with a super yummy buttercream frosting though. They have 3 locations in Davis County. Their cookies are $1.50 each. I gave this cookie 5 points.

The Fix. This one had overly sweet frosting, almost too much because it was so sweet. The cookie texture wasn’t my favorite, and it was really floury without a lot of flavor. The Fix is located inside a gas station in Draper Utah. Their sugar cookies can also be purchased in over 70 gas stations around northern Utah. The cookies sell for $1.89 each. I gave this one 6 points.

Crumbl Cookies. Their cookies are really buttery and really good. The frosting is really smooth and even with almond extract. It had a good balance of a little salty aftertaste. I really liked this cookie. Crumbl is one of the first places to offer late night cookie delivery across Utah. They have locations ranging from Logan down to one in St. George, and even have one in Idaho and a couple in Las Vegas. Their cookies cost $3 for one cookie or $10 for 4 cookies. I gave this cookie 9 points.

The Sweet Tooth Fairy. This cookie had a good frosting to cookie ratio. The frosting has coconut extract which was surprising, but really good if you like coconut. The cookie had a really good texture. The Sweet Tooth Fairy has 7 locations across Utah from St. George to Layton, and one location in Gilbert Arizona. Their cookies are $2.25 each. I gave this cookie 7 points.

Molly’s Marvellous Catering. Their cookie is really pretty. The cookie had a really buttery (possibly cream cheese) frosting. The cookie had a good texture. The cookie itself was rolled in sugar. This is a cafe that is only open a few days a week for lunch, and Friday night’s for dinner. They also have a catering company for different events. Their cookies are $1.50 each. I gave this cookie an 8.

Craving’s by Alisha’s Cupcakes. This one had a lot of frosting, but the cookie was also really thick. It was topped with fun sprinkles. The cookie was a little dry. Alisha won season 7 of cupcake wars. Their cupcakes are amazing, and now they sell cookies, bars, brownies, and other desserts – obviously including sugar cookies. They are located in Pleasant Grove. The cookies cost $1.75 each. They also sell larger sugar cookies. I gave this one 7 points.

Ruby Snap. This cookie was really thick, soft, and a bit cakey, but still moist. The frosting on top was really gooey and has lemon in it. Also they use beets to color the frosting. They have one location in Salt Lake City, but you can also buy their cookie dough frozen in Harmon’s Grocery Stores. The cookies cost $2.50 each, or $24.99 for a dozen. I gave this cookie 4 points.

Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage. The frosting on this cookie had too much food coloring, and some thought they could even taste the food coloring. The cookie is really cakey and dry. This one wasn’t super sweet. Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage has 3 locations in Salt Lake County, they also sell pastries, wedding and birthday cakes, and a few deli items. The cookie cost $1.39. I gave this cookie 1 point.

Old Grist Mill. This cookie was not super sweet, and didn’t have a lot of flavor. It was very dry and crumbly. They have 5 locations across northern Utah. They are known for their fresh breads and delicious sandwiches, muffins, bagels, and other baked goods. The cookies cost $1.39 each. I gave this cookie 1 point.

The Chocolate. The cookie is rolled in sugar and the edges are a little crispy. The cookie is very pretty though. Some people thought the cookie was too sweet. I thought it had a weird taste. The Chocolate is a Dessert Cafe with a location in Orem and one in West Jordan. They have cakes, cupcakes, bars, and one of my favorite desserts ever – the cazookie (which is a deep dish cookie served hot with ice cream on top). Their sugar cookies cost $1.65 each. I gave this cookie 2 points.

Smart Cookie. Their cookie is really thick, and was a little dry. It was topped with a really yummy cream cheese frosting though. Smart Cookie has 3 locations, in American Fork, Midvale, and Farmington. The cookies from Smart Cookie cost $2.30 each. I gave this cookie 7 points.

Cutler’s Cookies. The cookie was really thick and a little dry. It tasted to me like the store bought loft house cookies. The frosting was too sweet. They sell sandwiches, and a few other deli items, and cookies. They have 3 locations across northern Utah. It costs $1.85 for their big sugar cookie. I gave this cookie 3 points.

Hug – Hes.  This is a giant cookie. The cookie is bland and not super sweet. Their is a lot of frosting though. The frosting was really soft and not set on top. They won Studio 5’s best sugar cookie back in 2012. Hug-Hes is a cafe with locations in Davis County and Weber county. They also do catering for events. Their big sugar cookies cost $2.27 each. I gave this cookie 5 points.

Now for the totals!! Drum roll please! We ended up with a lot of ties this round.

1 – Molly’s was our winner! They got a total of 44 points!
2 – Suss Cookie Co got 41 points.
2 -. Crumble got  41 points.
4 – Smart Cookie got 36 points.
4 – Twisted Sugar got 36 points.
4 – Sweet Tooth Fairy got 36 points.
7 – The Fix got 28 points.
7 – Cravings by Alisha’s Cupcakes got 28 points.
9 – Swig got 23 points.
9 – Ruby Snap got 23 points.
11 – Cutlers got 19 points.
11 – Hug Hes got 19 points.
13 – The Chocolate got 12 points.
14 – Old Grist Mill got 10 points.
15 – Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage got 5 points.

So there you have it! Any of the top 3, or even the top 6 are definitely winners and delicious cookies to try.
