Dear Colby,
You are three years old today. For some reason three seems super old all of a sudden. You’re suddenly turning into a little boy instead of just a toddler.
I’ve been all sorts of emotional today just thinking about how fast you’re growing up right before me. Looking at pictures of you younger and as a sweet little baby (and I think part of it is realizing how quickly Logan is going to grow up too and I can’t do anything to stop it).
You are really independent and want to do everything by yourself, so I especially love it when you still ask for my help and still need me. You’re stubborn just like I often am and won’t give in to do something you don’t want to do. This can be so frustrating, but I hope it means you’ll stick to your guns and won’t let anyone pressure you as you get older.
Your favorite food is “chicken sauce” (or orange chicken), but you also love pizza (with no spicies), crab, salmon, eggs, granola bars, fruit snacks and more. You’re a pretty good eater, though you don’t eat a lot of vegetables and even make me pick the tiniest pieces off your food.
We signed you up for a soccer team with some of your friends, but you mostly hate it. You show your stubbornness especially when we try to get you to play soccer and usually refuse. You are the youngest on the team by a few months though, so we’ll let it go 😉 You love playing soccer with me and dad though. You also love playing baseball and basketball.
You are so adventurous and love going camping and fishing and hiking and just being outdoors. You love exploring with dad and finding new bugs. Last week we brought some bugs inside in a water bottle and right before your nap you let them out into your bed and got really scared. I immediately found the beetle, but there were 2 crickets lose in your bed. Dad helped us find one more of them before your nap. Later that night you stuck your hand on the side of your bed and the second cricket crawled on your hand and it really scared you. We found him though and finally your room was bug free and I think it scared you enough you won’t be letting any bugs out any time soon.
You love Star Wars and I just know it makes your dad so happy and so proud. You love playing with your lightsaber toys and your birthday party was Star Wars themed. Your favorite toys right now are your “boom guns” which are mostly Nerf Guns, but you also love bubble guns, water guns and any toy gun that makes noise.
You’re already filling your role as an older brother magnificently. The first month or so was hard for all of us – adjusting to new schedules and having a new little person in our life to stretch our hearts and spend our time with. But lately you have been so sweet with Logan. You tell me he is your friend and give him kisses, and you get so excited when we talk about him getting bigger and being able to move around and you say that he’ll play with your toys and I hope you really will share with him 😉
Anyway, that’s enough of me rambling on. But I want to remember you as you are now and hope you know how much I love you.
Love you forever,
Mom

What a beautifully sweet tradition. It will be so fun for Colby to look back at your thoughts and words about him and the pictures. He really is a cute wonderful little boy and with that stubbornness he sounds just like his mommy. Love you!
