In our backyard we have our vegetable garden, a tall bradford pear tree, a fence covered in honeysuckle, a firepit (that we built) ,and a shed. But our back yard didn’t have a lot of color.
A while back I saw this adorable idea thanks to wordpress’s ‘Freshly Pressed’ Hanging Flower Tins. It looked easy and cheap enough, so I showed the idea to Nate and we decided to go for it. Of course we already have one planter box full of herbs, so we didn’t exactly need to plant more, so I decided it would be even cuter and add more color to our yard if we put flowers in the tins, instead of herbs.
We are lucky that we have a giant thrift store near us called D.I. And we were able to get 7 cans for only like 4 or 5 dollars. Then we wanted more and got 5 more from a Savers near us. If you don’t have a DI or Savers near you I recommend looking at other small thrift stores in your area, or if you drink coffee and have old tin coffee cans those would work great, and you could also go to a store like Home Depot or Lowes, but they would probably be more expensive.
Ps. Sorry this is being posted so late in the season, but there is still a little time to plant some flowers and add some color to your yard.
Supplies:
- Metal Pails or Cans (Any small to medium size will work. We decided to have all different shapes and sizes, but you could try to get uniform ones, it just might take longer to find matches)
- Metal Spray Pain (In whatever color(s) you like)
- Electric Drill and Bit – 1/8 inch size (Or a hammer and nails)
- Twine
- Soil
- Flowers
1. Remove any price tags or stickers from each of the pails. Clean them with a wet cloth.
2. Lay out newspaper on your driveway or some other flat space outside. Place pails right side up.
3. Shake spray pain can to mix the paint. Shake for 1 minute.
4. Hold the paint can 8 to 10 inches from the pail you are painting and spray by pressing the nozzle. Move back and forth, and rotate the pail around or move around the pail to cover all sides.
5. Allow to dry for 30 minutes and then repeat step 4 once again.
6. Drill 4-6 holes in the bottoms of the pails to allow the water to drain out.
7. Drill 2 holes near the top of the pail, about 1 inch apart from each other, on whichever side you want for the back.
8. Cut twine to the length that you would want it. Figure this out by holding pot where you want it to hang, Put one end of the twine by the pot, up to what you would hang it from, back to the pot. Cut.
9. Loop each side of the twine through the holes in the pail. Tie ends of the twine to each other. Double knot to be safe.
10. Fill pot with soil and then flowers.
11. Hang flower pots and enjoy the beauty and color you added to your yard.
Be sure to water the flowers often (daily) as the soil will dry quickly.
