The place I was looking forward to trying out the most during our trip to Portland, was Salt and Straw. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Salt and Straw is an ice cream shop made with fresh and local ingredients. The ice cream flavors aren’t all traditional and they are happy to give samples as you’re deciding what flavors you want to get a scoop of.
They also had a couple of their flavors that were developed by children at a local school, which is so fun I think! The shop we went to had a flavor called “A Lick of Happiness” and “Fantastic Fruity Fun Sorbet” that were created by kids at Abernathy Elementary. I sampled the flavor Fantastic Fruity Fun, which was a combination of raspberry, lime, cherry with sprinkles and fruity pebbles, and I don’t remember what else. The sorbet was really delicious, but the fruity pebbles were a little weird for me 😉
I also sampled the Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, Arbequina Olive Oil, and Almond Brittle and Salted Ganache. The strawberry balsamic was surprising how much I liked it, the black pepper added a little spice to it, but the strawberry and balsamic together was really good. The olive oil flavor tasted like olive oil, I wouldn’t get a full scoop of it, but it was interesting to try. The almond brittle and salted ganache flavor was amazing – I don’t know why I didn’t get a full scoop of it, because it was so good, and full of lots of almond brittle chunks.
I ended up getting a scoop of Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons and Freckled Woodblock Chocolate. Nate got a scoop of Coconut with Petunia’s Salted Caramel Bars and Chocolate Gooey Brownie.
Both of mine were really good, the sea salt and caramel was pretty salty, with lots of caramel swirled throughout. And the woodblock chocolate was like a toned down chocolate with malt in it, and speckles of chocolate pieces throughout. It was refreshing to have something a little sweeter and calmer in contrast to the salt caramel flavor.
Both of Nate’s flavors were really good too. The coconut one was so good, with chunks of caramel and cookie bar throughout. And the brownie chocolate ice cream was really rich and so chocolatey good.
Anyway, I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any of their flavors. And its such a fun local place to visit, I love that they use local ingredients too. Hope you’ll try it out if you visit!
