Homemade hot chocolate mix is the perfect way to have a warm cup of hot cocoa, or great layered in a jar for a cute gift!
A big mug of hot chocolate is just what I need on a cold day! And this past week has been no exception for lots of cold days (and lots of snow!) and a few mugs of hot cocoa to go along with them.
Pin this Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix for later.
I’ve never made my own hot chocolate mix, so I figured it was about time to try and it turned out delicious. Its a simple mix with just THREE ingredients, and then you can add a couple fun additions to add a fun flavor to the mix!
All you need for this homemade hot chocolate mix is powdered/dry milk, baking cocoa powder, and sugar.
You can either mix the three ingredients together and keep the homemade cocoa mix in a jar or other airtight container for whenever you’re ready for a cup, or you can layer the hot cocoa mix in a pretty jar to make adorable neighbor gifts for the holidays!
I added a few dark chocolate chips and crushed up candy canes to my mix because I like my hot chocolate rich, extra chocolatey and it’s definitely delicious with peppermint too.
This mix is perfect layered in a jar. Quart jars are perfect for this recipe amount! Or you can cut the recipe in half, or fourths to make smaller jars for smaller gifts, which would be perfect for coworkers or friends.
Seal the jar up and tie it with a bow and give them away as a super cute, and delicious gift to your neighbors! I topped mine off in the jar with the chocolate chips and crushed up candy cane to make the jar extra pretty!
Homemade Hot Cocoa Mix Mix-In Ideas:
- chocolate chips
- crushed candy canes
- mini marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows
- mini peanut butter cups
- white chocolate chips
- caramel bits
- orange zests
- malt balls
- mint chips
Any of these mix ins would be delicious, and some of them would taste great together too. Chocolate chips and marshmallows. Orange zest and Chocolate Chips. Peanut Butter cups and marshmallows. You can play around with it. You can add up to one cup of additions. One cup should fit on top of your mix if you use a quart sized jar.
After you make the jars and close them up, add a note to the top, or tied on the side of the jars that says “Stir everything together in a large bowl. For each serving combine 1 cup of hot water or milk with 1/3 cup hot chocolate mix and stir together.”

Have you ever used coconut milk powder to make it dairy free? Thank you.

I haven’t tried it!! But I think it would work?! Let me know if you try it!
Sandi says
I will try this recipe without Splenda. Please do your research on it. It isn’t natural, therefore, causes all sorts of health problems. If you want to substitute sugar then use something natural like Stevia.
Aimee says
Thanks for the info! I usually just stick with sugar, but have used splenda as well.
