What is Brazilian Lemonade?
Brazilian Lemonade is actually made with limes. It is a drink that is creamy, sweet, tangy, and refreshing.
It is called lemonade due to translation differences from the Portuguese language. The Portuguese word limão is the word for both lemon and lime, and limonada gets translated into English as lemonade, so thats where the confusion for the English name comes from. In Brazil they also call it limonada suiça, which translates to Swiss Lemonade.

How to make Brazilian Lemonade
- Blend. Add the limes, half of the water, and the sugar to a blender and pulse a few times.
- Strain. Pour the mixture through a strainer into a large pitcher to remove the lime pieces and pulp.
- Mix. Pour the remaining water, and the sweetened condensed milk into the pitcher and and stir them together. Taste and add more sweetened condensed milk if needed if the limes are sour, or more bitter.
- Serve over ice. Pour the drink over individual cups of ice cubes to enjoy cold.
Tips and Tricks:
- Adjust the sweetness – Adjust the sweetness of the drink by adding more or less sugar or sweetened condensed milk according to your tastes.
- Add flavors – Add one pump (or 1 TBS) of your favorite flavored drink syrup to the lemonade to change the flavor. (This will add a little extra sweetness to your drink, so cut the sugar if you want). Strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, peach, etc. would all be delicious. You can make your own flavored simple syrups to add, or grab some from the store – I like Torani Syrups.
Storage Instructions
This Brazilian Lemonade is best enjoyed fresh. But if you have a little leftover it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Stir the drink well before serving.
Brazilian Lemonade FAQs
Can I use lemons instead of limes?
Yes of course. Traditional Brazilian Lemonade uses limes, but of course you can substitute lemons if that’s what you have on hand, or what you prefer.
Why is my Brazilian lemonade bitter?
Because we are blending up the whole lime, pieces of the white pith can mix into the drink and can add a bitter flavor. A couple ways to combat this are to blend the limes, water, and sugar for less time. Another option is to remove the peels, especially if they are extra thick, to remove any bitterness from the peel.
This Brazilian lemonade is such a nice refreshing drink on a hot summer day. It has a creamy texture, unique flavor, and is such a nice sweet and tart drink.
