This Eggnog French Toast Casserole is such a delicious holiday season breakfast with hardly any work. It’s a great way to elevate your breakfast game, with the rich and creamy flavors of eggnog and nutmeg in a sweet breakfast casserole topped with the best crunchy streusel topping.
French toast casserole is one of my favorite ways to have French toast. It’s soft throughout and loaded with a delicious custard flavor, and with the best crumbly brown sugar and cinnamon streusel on top. I love the flavor of eggnog and I love this Eggnog French Toast casserole for its warm and comforting flavors!
This French toast casserole is based off our classic Overnight French Toast Casserole Recipe with a delicious holiday season twist.
It’s perfect for Christmas breakfast – prepare the casserole on Christmas eve, and bake it up the next morning. When its ready top it with maple syrup, buttermilk syrup, or other favorite toppings.

Eggnog French Toast Bake Ingredients
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Strawberry French Toast Casserole Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- loaf of French bread or Brioche – especially good with a homemade loaf of french bread.
- eggs
- eggnog
- granulated
- brown sugar
- vanilla extract
- ground cinnamon
- nutmeg
- salt
- flour
- butter
How to make Overnight Eggnog French Toast
- Prepare the bread by cutting it into 1 inch sized pieces, or tearing it with your hands. Spread it evenly into a greased 9×13 pan.
- Mix the custard. Add the eggs, eggnog, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to a large bowl and whisk them all together until the eggs are beaten and mixture is combined well.
- Pour the eggnog custard over the top of the bread evenly. Flip some of the pieces over if they don’t get custard on them while pouring. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or foil and place it in the fridge to chill at least 2 hours, up to overnight.
- Make the crumble topping. You can make this the night before and store it in a bag, or the morning of. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Use a pastry cutter or 2 forks to cut the butter evenly into the mixture until you have small pea sized clumps.
- Bake. When you’re ready to bake, remove the dish from the oven and let it come to room temperature while you pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Break the crumble into pieces and sprinkle it over the top of the casserole evenly. Bake until the casserole is cooked through, and the top is golden brown. Let it cool for about 5 minutes.
- Slice and enjoy. Top individual portions of the French Toast Casserole with powdered sugar, butter, syrup, whipped cream, or other desired toppings.
Tips and Tricks:
- Bread type – You can use your preference of bread, Challah, French bread, Sour Dough, or Brioche will work.
- Dry Bread – The bread will soak up the egg mixture even better if you open up the wrapper of it the day before making to help it dry out.
- Less soft – If you prefer a dryer French toast casserole you can soak your bread pieces in a bowl overnight, instead of in their baking dish, and carefully spoon out the pieces into the baking pan with a slotted spoon. This will leave some of the extra liquid behind in the bowl.
- Too dark on top – If the streusel topping starts to get too dark while baking, place some aluminum foil over the top of the pan in the oven.
How to store leftover Eggnog French Toast?
If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container, or cover the container they were baked in with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for 3 to4 days. Microwave individual pieces in the microwave for 30-60 seconds, or until warm throughout, and enjoy like its fresh!
Can I freeze French toast casserole?
You can also freeze individual pieces of this amazing casserole, by wrapping them up in plastic wrap and storing in a freezer safe bag. Let them defrost in the fridge overnight, then microwave for 30-60 seconds, or heat it at 350 F in the oven until warm.

Eggnog French Toast Casserole
Ingredients
For the Eggnog French Toast:
- 16-18 oz bread (french bread, challah, brioche, etc)
- 6 eggs
- 2 cup eggnog
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp salt
For the Crumble Topping:
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup butter (cold)

- Large Mixing Bowl
Instructions
For the Eggnog French Toast:
- Grease a 9×13 pan.
- Cut up the bread, or tear it into chunks, and spread it evenly into the prepared pan.
- Add the eggs, eggnog, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt to a large bowl. Whisk it all together until combined.
- Pour the eggnog custard mixture over the top of the bread evenly. Flip some of the bread pieces over if they don't get any custard on them while pouring.
- Cover the pan and place it in the fridge to chill until needed, at least 2 hours, preferably overnight (10 hours).
For the Crumble Topping:
- (You can make this the night before, or the morning of) In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Use a pastry cutter or 2 forks to cut the butter into the mixture evenly, until you have small pea sized clumps. Cover in an airtight container, or ziplock bag, and place in the fridge until you're ready to bake, unless using immediately.
For Baking:
- When ready to bake it, remove the casserole pan from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature while you preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Break the crumble topping into small pieces if you made it ahead of time.
- Sprinkle the crumble over the top of the french toast casserole evenly.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until the casserole is cooked through and no longer soggy.
- Let cool for a few minutes, then slice up and serve.
- Top individual portions with powdered sugar, butter, and syrup as desired.
