This baked French Toast is so good. It is like eating dessert for breakfast. We topped it with buttermilk syrup, more strawberries and whipped topping. I had to hold myself back from eating 2nds and 3rds.
Ingredients:
French Bread:
1 loaf French Bread or other hard crusted bread (I used 4 large whole grain rolls)
5 large eggs (beaten)
2 1/2 cups milk
3/4 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon orange zest
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup sliced strawberries
Streusel Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into pieces
Additional sliced strawberries for topping
Buttermilk syrup
Whipped Topping
Directions:
French Toast Directions
1. Spray 9×13 pan with PAM or like spray.
2. Cut up bread into cubes or tear into bite size cubes and spread throughout 9×13 pan.
3. In a bowl, mix together beaten eggs and milk.
4. Add orange zest to sugar and combine well.
5. Add orange sugar and cinnamon and vanilla to milk/egg mixture.
6. Pour milk over bread.
7. Add strawberries in between breads and pushing it down so as to not sticking out.
8. Cover with plastic wrap and set in fridge for overnight.
Streusel topping directions
9. Mix flour, sugar, and spices together well.
10. Cut butter into flour mixture with a fork or pastry cutter until it is pea size pieces.
11. Cover and place in fridge overnight.
Ready to Bake
12. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
13. Sprinkle streusel topping over french toast.
14. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes.
15. Serve with warm syrup, either maple syrup or buttermilk syrup.
16. Serve with more sliced strawberries and whipped topping.
The original recipe called for strawberries and rhubarb, I can envision this with blueberries too.
