Red Velvet Cake Balls are easy to make with red velvet cake and your favorite cream cheese frosting. Dip them in white chocolate for a delicious bite sized treat!
When I think of Valentine’s day treats, I think of chocolate or red velvet. What’s better for celebrating Valentine’s day with your loved one than a delicious treat to share. And of course chocolate, cause I mean, its chocolate – and red velvet is nice and red and Valentine like, right? These red velvet cake balls would make a perfect Valentine’s day treat!
Ingredients Needed:
It is so easy to make homemade cake balls! All you need is a cake, and frosting. You can use store bought for either, or both. You mix them together in a large bowl and then roll them into little balls and dip in chocolate!
You can make them in any flavor you want! Chocolate cake mix chocolate frosting. Pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. Yellow cake with white frosting. You name it.
They are the perfect easy and delicious bite sized treats.
How to make cake balls?
- These cake balls are super easy to make too. You just need to bake up a red velvet cake. You can use a homemade red velvet cake or just use a box red velvet cake mix, and follow the package directions. I usually use a boxed cake mix, I promise know one will know any better.
- After the cake is baked and cooled, you’ll mix up the cake crumbs with a delicious cream cheese frosting. Again for this, you can use store bought frosting, or your favorite homemade recipe. I’ve done, both, but my favorite is using this homemade cream cheese frosting cause it’s amazing, but canned really does work just as well.
- So you’ll have a nice soft dough, that you can roll into balls now. The dough is sticky, and a little messy and the red color will coat your hands and fingers as you work. But don’t worry, it’ll all wash off when you’re done. Roll mixture into small 1-inch sized balls.
- Place the rolled cake balls onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. The balls need to be frozen for about 30 minutes now, this helps them hold their shape better when being dipped in the melted white chocolate.
- Melt the white chocolate chips, chopped up white chocolate, or almond bark in a small microwave-safe bowl according to package directions, or in 30 seconds increments until you can stir it smooth.
- Dip cake balls into the melted white chocolate by dropping them in and carefully lifting them out with a toothpick, or fork.
Tips and Tricks:
- A small cookie scoop will work well to scoop out the batter to keep the red velvet truffles nice even sizes. Roll them smooth after scoop with your hands.
- Don’t forget to freeze the cake balls. It makes them much easier to work with and hold their shape, and will keep the balls from falling apart when dipped in the melted chocolate.
- You can turn these fun bite sized treats into red velvet cake pops by placing them on a lollipop sticks before freezing them. You’ll form the dough balls and then place the sticks into the balls. Allow them to harden in the freezer at this point. The nice thing about cake pops is the sticks make the perfect thing to dip them into the white chocolate even more easily, and without as much mess.
- If you use coconut oil in your white chocolate, the cold of the balls will help the chocolate harden quickly. This is a good and bad thing. It’s nice because the chocolate doesn’t take hours to set, but the hard thing is you need to decorate them quickly if you’re going to use sprinkles so that they stick before the white chocolate fully hardens.
- Dip your red velvet cake truffles into milk chocolate or dark chocolate for a yummy flavor twist.
- Substitute the red velvet cake mix with your favorite cake mix flavor for a different flavor.
How to store cake balls?
Store any cake balls in an airtight container or zip top bag in the fridge for up to 1 week.
You can also freeze the cake pops by sealing them up tightly with a vacuum sealer, or wrapping them tightly with plastic wrap, and then in a freezer safe bag for up to 3 months.
These red velvet cake balls are like little white chocolate dipped bites of red velvet cake. They’re the perfect little bite sized treats. Perfection. Nate and I couldn’t stop eating these little bites of goodness!
They’re so fun for any time of year, for a fun holiday treat, or for special occasions. Though I’m extra found of serving these for the perfect valentine’s day treat. They’re also so fun for serving at a party. They’d be a great option for Christmas or New Year’s eve!
