These homemade oreos are so easy to make, starting with a cake mix for the cookie base. They’re soft and delicious, filled with a sweet cream cheese frosting in the middle!
Back in 7th or 8th grade I took a home ec. class. I remember it including a section on sewing and a section on cooking. The two things I remember learning to cook are English muffin pizzas and homemade oreos. I also remember learning to sew a pillow, it might have been shaped as the letter A – for Aimee 😉
But back to the homemade oreos.
These homemade Oreos are perfect soft chocolate cookie sandwiches, with a rich cream cheese frosting in the middle. They’re irresistible. They’re even better than I remember them being from my 8th grade class. Or maybe I’m just a better baker now 😉 These homemade Oreo Cakesters would be so yummy too.
How to make Homemade Oreos?
They’re so easy to make because they start with a cake mix. It’s as easy as mixing a box of devil’s food cake mix (the dry powder mix, not prepared according to the box) with 2 eggs, and a little oil.
You’ll scoop the dough into 2inch balls, that are a little smaller than a golf ball, and place them onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment or a silicone liner. You’ll flatten the balls a bit with your fingers or a cup, to make little disk. Then bake them up when they are just set and the tops of the cookies are no longer shiny.
Remove from the oven and let them cool for about 2 minutes on the cookie sheet, then completely on a cooling rack. Bake up the rest of the dough/cookies.
The frosting I like to use for these is an easy cream cheese frosting. You could also make a buttercream frosting if you like that better. But for the cream cheese frosting you’ll need cream cheese, butter, some powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whip them all up until you have a smooth frosting. (You can also use a store bought canned frosting, if you want to make these even easier)
To assemble the homemade cake mix oreo cookies, you’ll take a small spatula and spread the frosting onto the bottom of one of the cookies. Place another cookie on top of the frosting, bottom side down, and lightly press them together.
Voila. Your delicious cookies are now ready to enjoy!
You can also place the cookies in the fridge to chill for an hour or longer, and enjoy them cold. If you have any leftover, you’ll also want to keep them in the fridge in an airtight container, to keep the cream cheese frosting good.
This recipe makes just 12 sandwich cookies, (because you need 24 cookies to make 12 cookie sandwiches) so if you need more than that you’ll want to double the recipe. You’ll just need 2 boxes of cake mix instead of one, and then you’ll use a whole block of cream cheese instead of a half of a block for the cream cheese frosting. And of course double of everything else too.
These homemade Oreos are different than store bought. They’re not crunchy like the ones you can buy, but they aren’t cakey like whoopie pies (despite being made with a cake mix 😉 ). But they are soft, and a little chewy, somewhere in between those two.
But like the Oreos you can buy from the store, they’re delicious with a big glass of milk.
What’s better than two soft chocolate cookies sandwiched together with the best cream cheese frosting in the middle? Not much, my friends, not much. You can’t bear how easy and how delicious these cookies are!
These cake mix oreos are going to quickly become some of your favorite cookies. You’re going to make them once, and then want to make them again and again.

What size cake mix boxes? With shrinkflation they are getting smaller.
Aimee says
I’ve done an 18.25oz and 15.25 oz with this recipe, so if you can still find 15.25 you should be good. If it feels super sticky, you can add about 1-2 TBS of flour

How long can they be frozen already made
Aimee says
About 3 months

Hi! Can you freeze leftover uncooked dough?
Aimee says
It should freeze great!
