I love starting my morning with a smoothie. I am always one to have a sweet tooth, so smoothies are a great way to satisfy my sweet tooth with something a little healthier.
They’re a great way to start the day because they are filling, delicious, and often better for you than the high sugared cereals, or pancakes smothered in syrup that we might be eating instead.

Smoothies often aren’t super low calorie, but they are often made up with fruit and yogurt, which are a lot better for you than a lot of other options.
Smoothies are also a great option for a snack, or a late night treat that, at least, I don’t feel as bad about eating – because let’s be honest a lot of times I’m eating cookies or chips instead. And this smoothie is much better than that!
I may have found a new favorite smoothie and I couldn’t wait to share it with you! This chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie is a real winner!
I altered my peanut butter banana smoothie recipe by adding in some cocoa powder and this amazing chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie was born.
This creamy smoothie comes together in just a few minutes with only a few ingredients and its so good that you’ll want it every day for breakfast or dessert!
It’s honestly not too bad for you, with about 8.5-12.5g of protein per serving (depending if you split it into 2 or 3 servings) because its loaded with bananas, peanut butter, and Greek yogurt.
Ingredients Needed:
- creamy peanut butter – to add a nice peanut butter flavor
- bananas – frozen is best if you have them
- milk – to help everything blend up, you can use cow milk, or other non-dairy milks like almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk, etc.
- vanilla greek yogurt – an unflavored Greek yogurt won’t be very sweet, so I recommend something with a little sugar or sugar substitute
- cocoa powder – unsweetened cocoa powder to give it a nice chocolatey taste
- ice cubes – depending how thick you want your smoothie
How to make Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie?
To make this smoothie you’ll need a blender, I have a Blendtec, but any blender should work! Add your creamy peanut butter, bananas, milk, yogurt, cocoa powder and ice into the blender.
Blend it all up until the smoothie is mixed well, and nice and creamy.
Top your glasses with warmed peanut butter, banana slices, and chocolate syrup, if desired.
Tips and Tricks:
- I suggest using a frozen banana if you have them. I like to take any of my bananas that are starting to get too ripe to just eat, this means they’re a little spotty and overripe, but not soft yet. Peel the bananas and cut them in half and toss them into freezer. Now they’re ready to use whenever you need frozen bananas for smoothies. Frozen bananas help to add thickness to your smoothie, without losing the flavor. Too much ice and your smoothie will be watered down.
- You can use any vanilla yogurt that you like.
- Plain yogurt will not have any sugar so you may want to add some sugar, or some honey, or maple syrup, to your smoothie if it’s not sweet enough for you this way. I like using vanilla greek yogurt because it’s usually lower in added sugar than other yogurts, but has a lot of protein. Plus I think it’s so delicious 😉
- Try adding a scoop, or half a scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder to make this smoothie even more filling, and protein packed.
Smoothie Bowl Toppings:
This creamy chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie is so delicious! It’s one of my favorite smoothies to drink, and it would also be delicious as a smoothie bowl! If you want to make this smoothie into a bowl, some yummy topping ideas for your smoothie bowl are:
- Sliced Bananas
- Granola
- Chia Seeds
- Sliced Strawberries
- Drizzled Peanut Butter or Cashew Butter
- Shredded or Shaved Coconut
- Chocolate Shavings or Nibs
- Hemp Seeds
- Cacao Nibs
Frequently Asked Questions:
Are Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana smoothies healthy?
This smoothie is a good healthier option for breakfast, or a snack. The smoothie is loaded with fiber, potassium, protein, and other vitamins that are good for our bodies. It’s not a low calorie breakfast or drink, but is filling, so it’s a good option to have occasionally, but not every day.
How to freeze bananas?
Peel the bananas and cut them into halves, then flash freeze them by placing them on a lined baking sheet and putting it in the freezer until frozen solid. Then transfer the bananas to a freezer safe air tight container, or freezer safe bag for up to 5 or 6 months.
This is a great healthy smoothie, and is a great way to start the new year off right, especially if you’re like me and pretty much addicted to candy and cookies after all the Christmas goodies. This is a delicious breakfast option, or a healthier alternative that will still completely satisfy your sweet tooth.

Ella says

Chelsea says
I tried to make this for one but definitely cut back on the Greek yogurt and cocoa powder because it turned out super bitter for me! I tried adding honey but I don’t know what I did wrong! Haha sounds like it has potential to be good though.
Ellen says
I don’t why it was super bitter for you. I do recognize different taste buds have a potential for making foods taste one way for some and other way for others. Did you use dark cocoa powder?
Anyway sorry it was good for you.
Aimee says
We also typically use a low fat vanilla Greek yogurt, as called for in the recipe, which is slightly sweetened, compared to plain Greek yogurt. If you used plain that could definitely add to the bitterness. Sorry.
Jesika says
I have learned from other chocolate shake recipes and I forgot when looking for bananas I didn’t look for green ones but I didn’t look for a little bit riper bananas, the riper the banana the sweeter it will be.
Aimee says
Great advice! Definitely look for a super ripe banana!
Ginger says
DO you use “unsweetened “ cocoa powder?
Ellen says
The cocoa powder used is unsweetened.
Tanya says
Used bananas that weren’t frozen, so I doubled the ice. Used dark cocoa powder, 2% milk, and homemade whole fat yogurt. Came out delicious!
Mini A says
It was so good I made a bunch of adjustments so I could use what I had on hand and it still came out great. I used half chunky peanut butter because I was almost out and half unsweetened almond butter and a spoonful of chocolate hazelnut spread. I also used vanilla peach Greek yogurt. Also threw in some cinnamon. So creamy and delicious and lots of room to play around I recommend everyone try this even if they have to make adjustments although I’d love to try it as listed above some time if I have the ingredients. Saving this recipe and will be making it again and again!
Ellen says
Wow, I am glad you liked it. I love the idea of cinnamon.
Diana says
I’m 8 months pregnant and had a random craving for a chocolate banana smoothie. Smoothie, not milkshake so that I can feel good about the nutrients going to my baby. I just tried your recipe and it’s perfect! Thank you thank you! Cold, creamy, chocolatey and full of good things for me and baby!
Aimee says
Yay! I’m so glad it hit the spot!
laura burger says
i only used used one banana instead of two, but it tased really good!
Ellen says
So glad it tasted good for you. I imagine the peanut butter flavor was stronger.
laura burger says
This smoothie was delicious! i only used used one banana instead of two, though.
Ellen says
Yay! I love knowing you liked it.
Alec K. says
it was very biiter. cut back on greek yougurt
Aimee says
The greek yogurt I use is vanilla which will keep the smoothie sweeter. If you use plain, I suggest in the post that you add a little honey or sugar to sweeten it.
Asano says
Love it、its totally delicious
Ellen says
One of my favorites!
Elizabeth Booth says
Loved this smoothie!! I added a splash of cold brew coffee and it was divine!!
Nutella guy says
Can I use Nutella if I don’t have peanut butter
Aimee says
I haven’t tried it, but it should work!
Darius says
Absolutely divine! I just got a Vitamix blender and this recipe comes out silky smooth. Instead of vanilla flavored yogurt I used plain with a splash of my homeade vanilla extract… delicious. Crack some black salt over the top and it kicks the flavor into overdrive.
May says
Ohhh…this looks so delicious and tempting I must try! Peanut butter and banana are a favorite combo in my home so this should go over gang-busters! Great share and gorgeous pics!
Shay Miller says
excellent recipe! quick and easy with only a few ingredients needed. definitely going to make it again, now away to enjoy my smoothie right now. thanks.
Shari says
I have plain greek yogurt on hand … would this work as well? Add honey maybe??? Thanks
Aimee says
Hi Shari! Plain Greek yogurt should work fine. I’d blend it up then taste it, if you think it needs a little sweetness add in a spoon of honey or sugar 🙂
Sharon says
For how long do you freeze the bananas?
Aimee says
I’m not sure how long they’d need, I usually throw a bunch of bananas in the freezer at once when I have extra or when they are starting to get over ripe, just to have on hand. I think overnight would be good.
Tanya Shaikh says
do you know the calorie content?
Aimee Berrett says
Im not sure actually. I’d just plug it into a calorie counter like my fitness pal if I were you!
Nadine says
What can I substitute for Greek Yogurt in the Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie ?
Aimee Berrett says
You can use regular vanilla yogurt instead, or you can leave it out completely, the smoothie might now be as creamy and about half of the protein comes from the yogurt if you cared about that part, but it should still be good without!
