These Walking Tacos are such a fun, easy and quick meal to serve up for taco night! They’re tacos served right in a chip bag, making them portable, and so fun!
Walking tacos are a great meal for everyone because they are totally customizable. It’s a perfect dinner option for Taco Night, and a great way to have a taco bar, by having a table-full of delicious toppings and everyone can make their own “Walking Taco”.
This is a bit of a silly recipe to share, because it’s so simple, but they’re such a fun idea I wanted to share them anyway! You might also love this Crockpot Taco Casserole for an easy option!
What are walking tacos?
Walking tacos are not technically tacos, but a fun name for eating taco salad from a bag. Basically you start with your favorite chips, like Fritos corn Chips, or Cheese Doritos, and open the bag up and load it with your favorite taco toppings.
These walking tacos are a great option for picnics, birthday parties, Cinco de Mayo, or any time you want a taco night!
How to make Walking Tacos?
Add the ground beef to a large saute pan over medium heat, and cook the meat through. Add in the seasonings, and tomato sauce and simmer until the sauce is thickened and the meat soaks it all up. Set the meat aside till you need it.
Get all the seasonings, and your chips ready and get ready to make your walking tacos.
Open up your bag of chips, then scoop in about 1/4 cup of taco meat. Add your favorite taco toppings, mix it all up in the bag and dig in.
Tips for making Walking Tacos:
- You can use your favorite type of chips, though I recommend a corn based chip like Fritos or Doritos.
- Instead of using ground beef like called for in this recipe, you can also use ground turkey meat. Or you could also try shredded chicken, carnitas, or barbacoa beef.
- Once the walking tacos are assembled, I don’t recommend saving them for later- but if you want to make your meal ahead of time, prep all the toppings and ingredients, and even cook the taco meat, then just bring everything out to assemble the “tacos” once you’re ready to eat.
These walking tacos are the perfect hand held way to enjoy the tastes of a taco, all wrapped up in a bag with some crunch chips. Everyone can make their own “taco” however they want and skip the toppings they don’t want.
Walking Taco Topping Ideas:
- shredded cheese
- diced tomatoes
- sliced or chopped avocado
- guacamole
- chopped lettuce
- black beans
- kidney beans
- chili
- corn
- sliced olives
- sliced or diced jalapenos
- sour cream
- salsa
- pico de gallo
- cilantro
My favorite combination is using a bag of Chili Cheese Fritos (I grew up eating them that way), some ground beef, shredded cheese, a little lettuce, and some sour cream! But mix and match to your hearts content!
These walking tacos are one of the easiest recipes ever, and you really can’t go wrong with them! They’re a great quick dinner option, that saves a bit on the mess, since you don’t even need plates for everyone to enjoy! You’ll also love these flank steak tacos for an easy dinner!

What a FUN idea! Great recipe! We had friends here yesterday, and offered multiple kinds of Doritos, Fritos, etc. (Thanks, Costco!) These were a BIG HIT! I love that everyone can personalize their meal and get what they want. So nice for a large group, with some adventurous eaters, and some less so.

If you slit open the side of the bag instead of the top it works a little better and you could probably get better pictures too!

Looks yummy, just don’t make them with Fritos (GMOs) or any other non-organic corn chips!
