This Whipped Cream and Cream Cheese Frosting is such a light and fluffy frosting, that isn’t too sweet. It’s perfect for cupcakes, cakes, whoopie pies, cookies, or however you want to use it.
This whipped cream cheese frosting is one of my favorites ever. It’s the slightly less sweet, slightly fluffier brother of cream cheese frosting – and I might like it even better! It’s light, fluffy, creamy and so delicious.
The recipe makes about 4 cups of frosting, so its great for adding a big pile of it on top of your cupcakes. I especially love it on top of our better than sex pumpkin cupcake!
The Best Whipped Cream and Cream Cheese Frosting
- The frosting holds its shape – even though its light and fluffy in texture, the frosting will hold its shape, and is perfect for piping.
- Not too sweet – The frosting isn’t as sweet as a traditional american buttercream, so you can add a nice light touch of sweetness to your favorite baked goods.
- Light and Fluffy Texture – This frosting is lighter than a classic cream cheese frosting recipe. It’s got a fluffier texture, that practically melts in your mouth – it also has a little less tangy flavor.
Ingredient Notes
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Whipped Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- cream cheese – use full fat cream cheese for the best flavor and texture. Use a block of cream cheese, not the kind in tubs.
- powdered sugar – also known as confectioners’ sugar. This frosting isn’t as sweet as other frostings, so it only needs 1 cup of powdered sugar.
- vanilla extract – use the real stuff for a better flavor
- salt – just a dash to balance out the sweetness
- heavy cream – you want to make sure your heavy whipping cream is cold to hold its shape.
How to make Cream Cheese Whipping Cream Frosting?
Making this cream cheese whipped cream frosting takes just a few minutes, and you’ll be enjoying this fluffy frosting in no time! For more details about the full ingredients and instructions, scroll down to the recipe card.
Step 1: Beat the cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer for a couple of minutes until it is nice and smooth and creamy.
Step 2: Add in the powdered sugar, vanilla extract and salt and mix for a couple minutes until combined. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl a couple times to make sure everything is combined.
Step 3: Slowly add in the cold heavy cream. While the mixer is running on low speed, slowly pour the heavy cream into the mixing bowl, with the cream cheese mixture. Once it is all added, turn the mixer to medium high speed, and continue mixing for a couple of minutes until it starts to thicken. You want it to thicken enough to be able to hold its shape, and until it has stiff peaks. Make sure to scrape the edges of the bowl down with a rubber spatula as it mixes, to ensure the frosting is mixed evenly.
Step 4: Use the frosting immediately. Pipe or spread the frosting onto your choice of dessert.
Tips and Tricks:
- In a warm kitchen – if your kitchen is warm, place your mixer bowl into the fridge to chill for about 15 minutes before mixing the frosting.
- Coloring – if you want to color your frosting, I recommend using gel food coloring. Add the coloring just before you add in the stream of heavy cream for the best results.
Storage Instructions
The whipped cream cheese frosting needs to be stored in the fridge if not using it right away. If you store it in airtight container n the fridge to use later it will deflate when you go to use it. It will still be safe to use for up to 4 days, but will not go as far, with the lost volume.
The best results are to use it right away. You can pipe it on to your desserts, and it will hold the shape – then the frosted desserts can be carefully stored in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Ways to use Frosting
This frosting is super versatile because it is not to sweet. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it.
- On cupcakes – this frosting piped beautifully on to cupcakes. I love it on my pumpkin cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes, red velvet, or chocolate cupcakes. Its delicious on practically any flavor of cupcake.
- On cakes – This frosting is great for spreading or piping on to your favorite sheet cakes or layer cakes. It would also be delicious piped on top of slices of cheesecake.
- On breakfast foods – spoon the frosting on your favorite breakfast foods like pancakes, waffles, French toast, or sweet crepes.
- In sandwich cookies – Fill your whoopie pies, or other sandwich cookies with the frosting
- As a Fruit Dip – Use is as a dip for your favorite fruits as a snack, I love it with apples, bananas, pineapple, or strawberries.
This fluffy frosting is one of my favorite frostings to use on my baked goods, and will be your favorite too. It’s creamy, a little tangy, a little sweet and adds such a nice hint of decadence to any dessert!
