Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Caramel Apple Dump Cake Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Apple Pie Filling – Two cans of store bought apple pie filling, or make your own.
- Ground Cinnamon – Adds a little extra fall flavor, but you can skip it if you want
- Caramel Bits – You can find these in the baking aisle at the grocery store. You can also use the same amount of wrapped caramels, cut into 3 or 4 pieces. Or try pouring caramel sauce over the top of the apples instead.
- Yellow Cake Mix – I love the buttery flavor of the yellow cake mix, but you can use a white cake mix, or spice cake mix too. If using a spice mix, skip the added cinnamon
- Salted Butter – One instance where I suggest salted butter, but unsalted works fine too.
How to make Apple Dump Cake

Step 1: Spread the Apple Filling. Add the apple pie filling across the bottom of a greased 9×13 baking pan. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the top.

Step 2: Add the Caramel. Sprinkle the caramel bits evenly over the top of the apples.

Step 3: Cover with Cake Mix. Sprinkle the dry (not prepared) cake mix over the top of the apples and caramel. Slice the butter into thin pieces, about 1/2 TBS each, and spread them evenly over the top of the cake mix.

Step 4: Bake the Cake. Bake the cake until the top is golden and the apples are bubbly. Remove from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes, then scoop it up and serve warm with vanilla ice cream (and more caramel syrup) on top.
Tips and Tricks:
- Add Nuts: For a nice crunch, add 1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts and sprinkle it evenly over the cake mix before adding the butter.
- Do not Mix: This is a “dump cake” that means we sprinkle (or dump) everything in the pan and don’t stir it up. The separate layers cook together, just right when they’re layered on top of one another.
- Spread the Butter Evenly: Try and slice the butter thin enough to cover most of the cake mix so you don’t end up with any dry spots.

Storage Instructions
Store any apple cake leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, or until warm throughout.

This Caramel Apple Dump Cake is the ultimate fall dessert. With only a handful of ingredients, and barely any prep you’ll have the best warm, gooey, and delicious dessert that everyone will love. Add a scoop of ice cream on top and you’ll have a new favorite dessert for the autumn season.
