This microwave mug brownie is the perfect solution when that late night chocolate craving hits. It’s a perfect quick and easy dessert that only takes a couple minutes to make!
When a chocolate craving strikes I want something quick and delicious, and this easy mug brownie recipe is the perfect solution. It’s ready in less than 5 minutes and all made in a mug, so when you’re done it’s minimal effort to clean it up too.
I love making small batch desserts like edible cookie dough for one, small batch chocolate cookies that makes just four cookies, or small batch puppy chow. They’re perfect for when that sweet tooth craving strikes, but I don’t want to make a full recipe that leaves me with a whole pan of brownies, or a couple dozen cookies. That I have no self control to stop myself from eating more and more.
And I don’t know about you guys, but these days my anxiety is getting to me most days, and it ends in me eating a delicious treat, most nights, perfect for my chocolate cravings.
The texture of this microwave mug brownie is a little different than your normal brownies with their soft middles, chewy edges and flaky tops. But it’s still nice and fudgy brownie, soft and chocolatey in every bite. t’s kind of like a brownie meets cake. And since it’s made in the microwave in only a few minutes we have to be a bit more forgiving, don’t you think? That doesn’t mean I don’t love this brownie, and you will too.
This microwave brownie is made in only about 5 minutes from start to finish. You’ll start by whisking your dry ingredients together in the mug, that’s flour, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, a pinch of salt, and a dash of baking powder. Then add in your wet ingredients, vegetable oil, milk, and a dash of vanilla extract. Then fold in some chocolate chips which make the brownie extra nice and fudgy in every bite.
You most likely have all the necessary ingredients to make this mug brownie at home, so it’s the perfect treat for when that craving strikes, I mean who can say no to a warm brownie?
Ingredients Needed:
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Brownie in a Mug recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- granulated sugar
- all purpose flour
- cocoa powder
- salt
- milk
- vegetable oil
- vanilla extract
- chocolate chips
You’ll microwave the brownie for about 60-120 seconds depending on the power of your microwave.
I like topping my chocolate mug brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream for the perfect hot dessert served a la mode, which is my favorite type of dessert. You can also top it with powdered sugar, or fresh berries. Or drizzle some creamy peanut butter or nutella on top!
How to make a mug brownie?
Like I said, you need a few simple ingredients to make this mug brownie. You’ll need white sugar, all purpose flour, cocoa powder, salt, vanilla extract, milk, vegetable oil, and some chocolate chips, and of course your mug. You can use a 12oz or a 16oz mug.
Right in the mug you’ll stir together your sugar, flour, cocoa and salt. Then add in your wet ingredients; vanilla extract, milk, and vegetable oil. Then stir in your chocolate chips. You don’t want to forget them cause they keep the brownie nice and fudgy in every single bite.
Then place the mug straight in the microwave. The cook time will vary depending on the power of your microwave. Microwave for 1 minute first, then in 30 second increments as needed till the top is set and brownie looks done. Mine took 2 minutes.
Enjoy the brownie immediately as it’s not nearly as good when it cools down, but so delicious nice and warm. And especially when topped with ice cream.
Tips and Tricks:
- Make sure you are using a microwave-safe mug to prevent any accidents from happening in your microwave.
- Substitute melted butter, or melted coconut oil for your vegetable oil.
- Substitute brown sugar for the granulated sugar in this recipe, or half of each.
- Make this into a vegan mug brownie by using your favorite cow’s milk alternative, like almond milk, cashew milk etc. And some vegan chocolate chips.
This recipe makes just one fudgy mug brownie, but it’s very rich and chocolatey so you can choose to share it, or enjoy the whole thing yourself.
This single serve brownie is the perfect gooey brownie for when you’re craving something sweet, or when that chocolate craving strikes. Don’t worry, you can thank me later.

Thanks for this recipe! I used coconut oil in place of the vegetable oil and it was excellent.

I’ve tried so many microwave brownie recipes that had comments saying they were the best one, I’ve lost count. Usually disappointed by the lack of flavor compared to a regular brownie. This one finally did it for me! It has so much more flavor in comparison to all the others recipes I’ve tried, really delicious.
Aimee says
Yay! That makes me so happy you loved it.

That makes me so happy to hear! Sounds like the perfect dessert to share!

I don’t see how this could be 650 calories. Unless you are including a high, rich ice cream like Haggen Daz. Just an observation.

I wish it was lower in calories too. Vegetable oil is 120 per tablespoon, so that’s 240. Then sugar is about 45 calories a TBS so that’s 180 calories. And chocolate chips are about 70 per TBS so that’s another 140. Then flour, cocoa powder, and milk.

The brownie was so perfect and yummy! It was a little spongey but other than that it was amazing! 😋

Hits the spot when you need something sweet quickly.
Nicole says
Can I leave out the cocoa powder and just use chocolate?
Aimee says
I haven’t tried it with melted chocolate instead, it would probably change the texture and I’m not sure how it would bake up

THANK YOU FOR SHARING..

I made this and it exploded in the microwave; I think because of the baking powder
Aimee says
My recipe doesn’t call for baking powder, but I did test one with baking powder with no issues 😳 Did you microwave it for only 60 seconds and it exploded?
Mary Ellen Dawson says
Have you noticed that after the third picture of this amazing mug cake, your directions say: “You’ll microwave the brownie for about 60-120 seconds depending on the power of your ice cream?” I think that should read, depending on the power of your microwave. lol My ice cream is pretty powerful! My microwave is not!
Aimee says
Oh wow, can you tell I finished up this post late at night 😉 I fixed it. Thanks for catching that! Haha!
Nancy A. says
The instructions say to add baking powder, but I don’t see it listed in the ingredients. I must have missed how much to add or something. Can someone let me know how much to add? Thank you so much! Really want to make this!!
Aimee says
Oops I updated that. I made 4 different mug brownies and ended up liking it better without the baking powder. Sorry, I fixed the recipe to say that. If you want to try adding it 1/4 tsp will do.
Liz says
It was exceptional. A+ brownie-in-a-mug.

I made this mug brownie, and it was delicious! I had been looking for a Betty Crocker Warm Delight copycat recipe that doesn’t use cake mix.
