How to make Overnight Strawberry French Toast
- Cut up the loaf of bread into bite sized cubes and spread them into a greased 9×13 baking pan.
- Mix the wet ingredients. Add the eggs and milk to a large bowl and beat them together until combined. Add in the sugar, orange zest, vanilla, and cinnamon and stir it all together.
- Pour the mixture over the top of the bread. Add the strawberry slices in between the bread pieces, pushing them into the casserole. Cover the pan with plastic wrap and place it in the fridge to chill for at least 1 hour, or overnight.
- Make the streusel topping. Mix the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl until combined. Add in slices of butter and work them into the flour mixture with a fork or a pastry cutter until you have a crumbly mixture, with pea sized pieces. Cover it and place it in the fridge until needed.
- Bake. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and bring the casserole out while its pre-heating. Sprinkle the crumb topping over the French toast casserole. Bake until the French toast is hot throughout, and the top is golden.
- Serve the French Toast casserole warm with syrup, more strawberries, whipped cream, and any other toppings you want.
Strawberry French toast Trips and Tricks:
- Bread choices – You can use challah, french bread, or sour dough instead of brioche.
- Milk – You can substitute the cows milk with almond milk, soy milk, almond creamer, etc.
- Stale bread – To let your bread soak up the milk mixture even better you can open the bread wrapper the day before making it to help it dry out.
- Too dark on top – If the streusel and top pieces of the casserole start to turn dark in color you can place some aluminum foil over the top of the pan, and let it keep baking that way.
- Nuts – Add up to 1/2 cup of nuts to the streusel topping if desired, pecans, walnuts, or macadamia nuts make a great choice.
How to store leftover French toast casserole?
If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container, or wrapped tightly with plastic wrap in the fridge for 2 to 3 days. Zap individual pieces in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds, until warm throughout, and serve as if it were fresh!
This strawberry baked French Toast is such a yummy breakfast or brunch! You’ll love adding it to your holiday morning, or any time you need to make breakfast a little extra special!
