This Philly Cheesesteak Pizza takes everything delicious about the sandwich and turns it into a pizza that is just as delicious. With juicy steak, sauteed peppers, onions, and mushrooms, and melty cheese all piled onto a crispy pizza crust. It’s total comfort food, and such a good flavor for pizza night when you want something a little different.
This recipe takes your Friday night pizza night to the next level. It nails the flavors of a Philly sandwich without any complicated steps or hard to find ingredients.
I’ve had several Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches, and I used to make dozens of them when I worked at a Sports Grill at my university campus. This pizza version has all those flavors, and comes together maybe even better than the sandwich.
The pizza has a creamy alfredo sauce, the steak stays tender, the veggies are flavorful, and the cheese just melts just right. It comes together easily enough to make pizza night any day of the week! You’ll want this for dinner, game days, and all your parties. You won’t be able to stop at just one slice.
Why You’ll Love this Pizza
- Easy to Make: The pizza is easy enough to make any day of the year, with simple ingredients and steps. You can even take a few short cuts with store bought pizza dough, or frozen seasoned Philly Steak meat.
- Classic Flavors with a Twist: All the goodness of a Philly Cheesesteak in a fun pizza format everyone will love. Extra cheesy, and extra delicious.
- Customizable: You can easily tweak the toppings to fit what you and your family loves. I always skip the mushrooms on half the pizza because I’m not a fan.
Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of some of the ingredients you’ll need for this Philly Cheese Steak Pizza Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Olive Oil: helps cook up the vegetables
- Yellow Onion: Caramelizes so nicely and balances the flavors for the sandwich and pizza.
- Green Bell Pepper: you can substitute a red pepper, or whatever your favorite is.
- Mushrooms: Slice up some Cremini or Portobello mushrooms for a nice savory, umami flavor
- Thin Sliced Beef: I like to freeze and slice up a Ribeye steak, which is the traditional cut of meat to use, but our grocery store often sells Beef Sizzle Steak, or other thin cut steak that can be used.
- Worcestershire Sauce: Gives the beef just a little flavor
- Pizza Dough: use your favorite homemade pizza crust recipe, or grab one from the grocery store.
- Alfredo Sauce: use your favorite homemade alfredo sauce, or store bought
- Cheese: I like using a mix of Provolone and Mozzarella for the traditional flavor, and to make the pizza extra melty.
How to make Philly Cheesesteak Pizza
Step 1: Saute the Veggies. Add a little olive oil to a skillet, then add in the onion, green peppers, and mushrooms at medium heat. Cook them for a couple minutes to help the veggies soften, then set them aside.
Step 2: Cook the Beef. Raise the heat and add in the beef slices, sprinkle them with Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper and cook for a couple minutes until just browned.
Step 3: Prepare the Pizza Dough. I like to make a few smaller pizzas rather than one or two large pizzas to get more of that crunchy crust edge. But large pizza is great too. Cut your pound of pizza dough into four portions and shape into balls. Then roll each ball out to be about 10-12 inches on a floured surface.
Step 4: Assemble the Pizza. Spread a thin layer of Alfredo sauce over the top of the pizza dough, to about 1/2 inch from the edge. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese and provolone evenly over the top of the sauce. Then top the cheese evenly with the veggies and meat. Sprinkle a little more cheese on top.
Step 5: Bake the Pizza. Transfer the pizza to the hot pizza stone in the oven, or a preheated pizza oven. Bake for about 10 minutes in the prepared oven (or about 2 to 3 minutes in a pizza oven) or until the pizza cheese is golden and melty.
Variation Ideas:
Customize this pizza however you like it by leaving off the ingredients you don’t like, or adding more that you do like. Here are some other yummy pizza toppings that would be good, but aren’t as traditional for philly cheesesteaks.
- Sweet Peppers
- Banana peppers
- Jalapeno Peppers
- Diced Tomatoes
- Bacon Pieces
- Parmesan Cheese
Tips and Tricks
- Steak: Do not overcook the steak. The steak is getting cooked until brown on the stove and then cooked again on top of the pizza. We want it to still be tender.
- Pizza Stone: Use a pizza stone if you have one. This will get your crust cooking quicker in the oven, and will give it a crispier bottom, and soft and chewy middle. If you don’t have a pizza stone you can bake the pizza directly on a pizza pan or cookie sheet.
- Don’t Overload the Pizza: If you’re customizing the pizza and adding a few extra toppings, don’t over do it. You want the pizza to cook evenly without having a doughy center, or uncooked cheese.
- Cheese Sauce: Add a drizzle of cheese sauce after baking for that extra cheese, authentic cheesesteak vibe.
Storage Instructions
Add leftover pizza slices to an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven for the best results. But you can also reheat it in the microwave, the crust will be softer. I don’t recommend freezing this pizza because the vegetables get too soft when frozen and thawed.
This is the best philly cheesesteak pizza. Its comforting and packed with the best flavor. The pizza is golden, bubbly, cheesy deliciousness that tastes like a philly cheesesteak sandwich meets pizza. You won’t regret making it!
