This Valentine Puppy Chow is the perfect Valentine’s Day treat with red and white Strawberry muddy buddies scattered with red, pink, and white m&ms, and sprinkles.
Happy February friends, I know some of you might be thinking about the big game later today, but I’m already moving on to Valentine’s Day! I love adorable Valentine’s day treats like these Pink Rice Krispie Treats, or these Valentine’s Day Popcorn Balls. Although, this Valentine Puppy Chow is also perfect for serving at your Superbowl watching party. I know we will be.
I love all types of muddy buddies, from the traditional peanut butter and chocolate muddy buddies, snickerdoodle muddy buddies, and more. Now these strawberry muddy buddies are a to die for flavor to add to the mix.
Puppy chow is such a delicious, easy, and perfect no bake treat! Speaking of, do you call them muddy buddies, or puppy chow?
This Valentine Puppy Chow is my new favorite. It’s made with both red and white candy melts to give the treat the perfect red and white colors for Valentine’s Day. But if we’re being real, this treat is so good any day of the year. Right?
This puppy chow is flavored with strawberry cake mix, to give it the flavor of strawberries in every single bite. The treat is mixed with Valentine’s Day colored m&ms and sprinkles to make the treat extra fun for the holiday!
The candy melts mixed with the strawberry cake mix gives these muddy buddies the perfect strawberries and cream flavor.
How to make Valentine Puppy Chow?
This sweet treat mix is made in only 10 minutes, and then it’s ready to eat!
So, first to make this puppy chow, you’ll get all your ingredients ready.
What do you need to make Valentine Puppy Chow?
You’ll need red candy melts, white candy melts, chex cereal, strawberry cake mix, and powdered sugar. I also like mixing in m&ms and sprinkles to make it extra fun.
You’ll separate your red candy melts in one bowl, white in another. Microwave those according to the package directions. While those are heating up, you’ll add half the chex to one bowl and half to another.
You’ll mix together your powdered sugar and strawberry cake mix (You can first heat treat your cake mix if you’re worried about the raw flour in it. Set it on a baking pan, and heat it at 350 degrees and bake for about 5 minutes, remove from the oven and let it cool down, then combine it with your powdered sugar) set that aside till ready.
Pour your red candy melts over one bowl of the chex and stir it all up till smooth. Add those to a ziplock bag and scoop in half of your cake mix mixture and shake it like a Polaroid picture.
Repeat with the white candy melts and cereal. Then pour those together into a bowl, mix them up with your red, pink, and white m&ms and sprinkles and your sweet treat is ready to go.
Can puppy chow be made ahead of time?
Puppy chow usually tastes best within the first two days of making it. It keeps the crunchiness of the cereal in that time. So you can definitely make it the day before an event or party that you want to serve it at.
The puppy chow can be stored for up to a week in an airtight container, but it will not be at it’s best if served after that time.
This Valentine’s Day muddy buddies recipe makes the perfect Valentine’s day treat. It’s so fun to serve up in a big bowl for a Valentine’s Day party at home, or for an afternoon snack when your kids come home from school, or you come home from work.
It would also be so cute packaged up in little boxes or cellophane bags and passed out to friends.

Fun unique way to make puppy chow. I made it for valentine’s day gifts. I doubled the recipe. I’ve never seen anything but white and choc meltaway chocolate. So I added food dye at the beginning, but be careful so it does not seize the chocolate. I used Giardelli melt discs and when I use those, I put a tsp of coconut oil in with them as well to make it a bit thinner consistency.

Glad you made it work! The colored candy melts can be found at party stores, or in the party/cake decorating aisle somewhere like Walmart 🙂

Can a gluten free cake mix be used instead?

I haven’t tried it, but I don’t see why not.

It’s safe to eat cake mix raw?

I’ve never had issues, but if you’re worried you can heat treat it in the microwave or oven
