Ingredients Needed
This is a quick overview of the ingredients you’ll need for this Garlic Butter Grilled Cheese Recipe. Specific measurements and full recipe instructions are in the printable recipe card below.
- Unsalted Butter – We want to control the salt, but salted works fine too.
- Fresh Garlic – freshly minced will give the best flavor
- Salt – Flavors the garlic butter nicely.
- Sourdough bread – a more substantial bread like sour dough works great for this, better than just a loaf of white bread. But you can use your favorite.
- Cheese – A mix of cheddar, mozzarella, and swiss cheese works really nicely to create the ultimate gooey sandwich.
How to make Garlic Grilled Cheese?
Step 1: Make the Garlic Butter. Mix the softened butter, garlic, and salt in a small bowl. Stir together until evenly combined.
Step 2: Prepare the Sandwich. Take one slice of bread and top it with a slice of cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss cheese, then another slice of bread. Spread the garlic butter evenly on the outside of each bread slice.
Step 3: Cook the Sandwich. Cook the sandwich in a grilled preheated to medium for a couple minutes on each side. Flip once the bottom is golden brown. Cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese in the middle is fully melted. Slice and enjoy.
Tips and Tricks:
- Low and Slow: Cook the sandwiches on medium low to ensure we get a nice golden crust on the exterior and fully melt the cheese in the middle of the sandwich.
- Garlic Hack: If you’re in a pinch use garlic powder in the butter instead of fresh garlic.
- Extra Toppings: Add extras like crispy bacon, fresh spinach, sliced tomatoes, or ham of added flavor and texture.
Storage Instructions
I recommend making the sandwiches and immediately enjoying them fresh for the best results. If you have extra sandwiches you can wrap them in foil or plastic wrap and store them in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a skillet or oven to remelt the cheese and regain crispiness.
Frequently Asked Questions
This sandwich already takes a grilled cheese to the next level. But if you want to make it even better, try adding things like parmesan cheese or drizzling olive oil into a large nonstick skillet over medium heat to add a little olive oil flavor to the garlic butter.
Of course, this is an excellent sandwich to pair with a tomato soup with the ooey-gooey melted cheese and fresh taste of the garlic cloves. It is a simple recipe that is next level and it helps you take your grilled cheese sandwich beyond simply bread and slices of cheese into the best grilled cheese sandwich you have ever made (or had!).
For this recipe we need the butter to make the garlic butter spread for the sandwich. Instead of butter try margarine, or a vegan butter spread instead.
What kind of cheese makes the best kind of grilled cheese?
The best kind of cheese for a grilled cheese isn’t just one cheese- it’s several! A mix of swiss, sharp cheddar cheese, and mozzarella is an excellent and delicious mix of cheeses. Other different options would be American cheese, Gruyere, Harvati, or Monterey Jack.
This Garlic Grilled Cheese is a simple upgrade to your sandwich that makes a world of a difference. Crispy, golden bread paired with gooey cheese, and a hint of garlic takes this classic to new levels! You’ll never go back to a plain grilled cheese sandwich again!

it was burnt so taste like garbage.

I don’t like the burnt flavor either. Maybe you need to adjust cooking time for your stove.

These look delicious, but thinking of making the garlic butter with roasted garlic, which I dearly love. Have never heard of the bread but it sounds great.
